SCAM!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I fell victim to this company. After 4 months of searching for my first full-time job, I thought this place would be a fun place to work. After going in for my interviews, I LOVED the people and atmosphere of the office. During my last interview I asked all of my questions about scheduling, vacation, compensation, etc. After my questions were answered, I decided to accept the position because it sounded great! Turns out, I was LIED to. I found this out during my first day of training. They specifically told me it was not door to door, which is exactly what it is. You are also working six days a week. Thankfully, it was a non-contractual job, so I was not required to stay. I let them know I would not be returning the next day and I ran far, far away!!!!!

Run. Run as fast as you can away from anyone involved with "5 North Inc." It's the same notion you were taught from an early age...if it sounds too good to be true it isn't true. Scam. Scam. Scam.

Just looked at the employee reviews on Glassdoor... this is another one of those typical, dime a dozen, door to door sales job, working 6 days a week, 12 hours a day, for 100% commission, no salary or benefits. NO THANKS!

Guest

I wish the OP had given further details.

Pyramid Scheme--Pure and Simple

Everything Wrong with 5 North: 1. They lie about everything. When I was hired, I was upfront about needing a base salary, and was reassured by my manager, Meghan, that I could do that. While this is technically true, it is almost a statistical impossibility. The only way to get the base salary is to reach quota--if you don't, you'll make straight commission. I was also told that the hours were 8:30 - 5:30, but this too is a lie. My first day started at 8:30, but every day afterward started earlier and ended later, some days starting as early as 7:30 and ending as late at 7 pm. That's an 11.5 hour workday for those counting, so not only are employees not being paid for their time, they're working nearly illegal hours. Last, they also lie about the possibility of getting health insurance. I honestly think that they just tell people this so they'll accept the "job". Maybe now that the ACA is in full effect they'll actually provide insurance, but seeing as they don't follow Labor Laws regarding working hours, I doubt they'll follow this. 2. They don't provide travel reimbursement. This job requires you to travel to and from the office in Manhattan as well as to whatever far flung part of NYC they send you to for that day. In the end, you're spending about $10 per day to work as an indentured servant without the bonus of being given a house at the end of servitude. 3. The only way to get ahead in this company is to recruit more people to work under you. This is not management training. It is a Pyramid Scheme, pure and simple. 4. They attempt to brainwash you into thinking that it is the best place to work. They show you slideshows of how much fun you'll have while working for them and they have their "senior employees" (i.e. anyone there for more than 6 months) talk about how much money they make while working there and how they're getting ready to run their own office. 5. They send you out to immigrant neighborhoods and you are tasked with manipulating people who don't speak English into buying from you. Those poor people have no idea what they're signing, but that doesn't matter so long as they sign on the dotted line. This was the worst part of working there--being made into Mephistopheles, getting people to sign a contract with the devil.

5 North - Job Interview Review from Chicago, Illinois

The company may not be very clear on what the job is but, they seem to have been in business since 2011. I do know that it is a pyramid scheme and they more than take advantage of young kids right of college. They are a Cydcor office and I would keep any one I know far away from this job. The biggest red flag is just complete lies about the pay in the interview. If you do interview with this company ask a ton of uncomfortable questions and watch them defend.

5 North INC, aka - Door to Door Sales Inc

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I was called and e-mailed SEVERAL times after posting my resume on Careerbuilder & Monster.com. I found that very odd but I decided to call and at least listen to what was being offered (the voicemails and e-mails gave no significant details of exact position or duties). When I reached the lovely (Athanasia Medenas Human Resources | 5 North, Inc. 212.695.0039 12 West 31st Street, 2nd Fl New York, NY 10001) I was treated to lack of information and details of what the position entailed. After a few more questions, and lack of answers I realized the gut feeling I had as a scam was too much to travel to New York for an interview. After canceling my interview and reading these reviews here and else where I suggest you don't waste a perfectly good suite and a Metrocard on these clowns!!

You can read former employee reviews at glassdoor. You dodged a bullet as you would have been walking around all day, going door to door for 100% commission.

No base salary and no benefits. You would have been responsible for all your own taxes, gas, meals, tolls and your own bail money if you got busted for soliciting without a license.

I totally agree!!

Thank you!

I am so glad I saw this website! They JUST called me and scheduled an interview saying they saw my resume on careerbuilder and thought I'd be a "good fit". They didn't really go into too much detail, barely asked me any questions and wanted me to come in "right away". Got an iffy feeling and did some research. Initially I just stumbled upon their website, facebook and some google reviews that were all positive. (Probably posted by current employees.) Dug a little deeper and found all these negative reviews. Thanks for the warning! I will most definitely NOT be going on the interview.

Job Interview Review

I'm glad I was about to cancel all my plans for this faky interview and I repeated to them over the phone that I don't want to waste my time for a fake position as she told me that I'm going to be offered a management position. Thanks all of you for your postage and saving a trip and not changing my plans.

http://5northnyc.com/about-us/locations/ : WEBSITE 5 North, Inc : NAME OF THE COMPANY The above is the website of the company I would like to post. I post my resume on careerbuilder.com. Then I received an email that they select me for the interview and then I reply to make sure what kind of job is this and plus if it's a commission based or salary based job as I am not interested to working 100% on commission based. While waiting on their reply they called me and want to set up an interview for tomorrow. I ask again is this a commission based job or based salary then the lady replied it depends on you interview. It's a Account Manager position. We have both the commission and the salary based jobs and the starting salary should be from $35000-$45000 depending on your experience and the interview. Then I said ok I will be there for an interview...After few hours I received another call from same company but someone else on phone this time and set up the appointment. I am confused and surprised that I guess I already talk someone from their company. But after reading all that nonsense I am not going there as I am already suspicious about the company in advance. Now I am sure they are not real but just going to waste my time tomorrow.

I have an interview with them next week. Is it worth going. I am a little confused after all the comments!

Guest

I had an interview with them today for an administration position, I don't know if I should take this company serious or not after all these negative comments....soooo frustrating!! !!!

Guest

I sent my resume to this company as well. I thought there was something off about them just navigating their website.

They're not clear on what they do. Check any other company's website that is as established as 5 north says they are. Notice the differences. 5North is so vague..

too good to be true sorry to say. That's just not how the world works. These reviewers have terrible grammar... which makes me even wonder what kind of recruiters are even calling these people in for interviews.

5North called me today for what I'm assuming must be an interview... I didn't call back. But I think it's safe to say, there are better opportunities to devote your time to. I'm sufficiently put off by this whole situation.

I'm withdrawing my candidacy.

For anyone else wondering, I would say don't do it. Job market is tough enough as it is to waste your time on some company that doesn't seem to have their *** together.

Guest

Did you end up going? I have an interview also

Guest

I'm sure it was a better choice for you to be unemployed than have the possibility of having a job. Did you also go out with the other OCW trash and protest your nonsense? just wondering...

5 North Inc are FRAUDS!

Sadly I fell victim to this fake and fraudulent company called 5 North Inc. (www.5northnyc.com) This company posted ads for account executive position on numerous job sites and they say that its a form of marketing and advertising firm that "help" fortune 500 companies get their word out. Well all of that talk is FALSE because all you do is follow a person around going from door to door asking to see a utility bill. This compnay prays on new college grads that are looking for work (i was one of them) and they expect them to walk the streets in crazy weather with little pay. One "supposed" worker at this company went over compensation saying that a account executive can make between $300 and $600 every week, while actually the account exes make less than a $100 a week. This company was based out of St. Lucia, MO and they have decided to come here to New York and continue their scams and decite. Don't let them get you like how they got me!!!!! This is more than a warning STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!!! I have a open case with the Better Business Bureau who will definitely look into this matter and make sure that this company is shut down, so if you see this comapny call or email or try to contact you, stay away its for your better good. P.S. There are other complaints about this company so please do your research!

Many companies doing the same thing. My question is how do they manage to survive so long?

Just on residuals from former salespeople? Some change their name about every two years, that is one tactic. Very typical type scam here. Unlike in the 1980's when I was dubbed into an interview to sell "Royal Prestige" cookware, we have the internet.

Beware immediate calls to contact you, multiple nonsense interviews, and no hard information. Than Merrill, with is real estate scamimars, even an auto dealership, I think King Dodge in St. Louis hired this scam artist who wanted you to pay $700 for "training you", his spiel was "If you need to fix our car to work a job, wouldn't you pay $700?"Another tactic, I think 5 North is also using it, it so mimic a good, old company. Search the Sec.

of State in your State, see what their legal entity is and if it's not been around 10 or more years.

Use caution. Most of these door to door places are, like I said around two years old, then disappear.

Guest

The Spin Group Inc is a new company that has just popped up that is doing this exact thing. Beware and stay away.

Could not get a honest answer out of anyone there.

Went through 3 interviews and had the job and I didn't even know what the job was!

Did not end up going on the first day because I found out exactly what the job was, a false scam to get me to go door to door in any weather conditions. A false promise of a management position when it's clear they use you until they're done with you then get rid of you.

Guest

I'm glad I found this out I had an interview but didn't show up I new it was a scam because my resume has nothing to do with a account manager so I ask myself is this real smh nah I'm not gone waste my time

Guest

They are a scam. I went in for the interview and told them I researched their company and was confused to what they actually market.

Once they knew I researched them, which everyone should do before any interview the so called recruiter became very rushed. He would not answer a direct question. Just for an FYI....never give your social security number or any person information to these people until they actually find you a position if there really is anything out there.

I was lucky, my interview was in Jersey City and I was in the area anyway...but I met someone out of work that just spent a lot of money to go into New York for this nonsense interview. When you are out of work, that's alot of money to waste.

Sad...

Guest

there are quite many marketing company which takes advantage of people seeking for employment.

They lure you in for supposed "interview" and ask you to work for free and pay your own transportation on their benefit to walk in poor safety at risk neighborhood selling services and products that no one wants and wait til the very end of the day to tell you that it is by commission only. Be a victim only if you are desperate.

WOW! So glad I found this site.

After posting my resume on careerbuilder I'm thinking that it was a mistake to do so because all I am getting are these SCAM Marketing "job" interviews.

I'm sorry to say but I am far too educated to be walking door to door in the cold and heat for anyone! Thank you for posting this and more people should do their research before wasting their time and money on this so called interview!

Guest

I'm actually embarrassed to say that I fell for 5 North's job advertisement. I actually hate thinking about or even admitting to myself that 4 weeks of that *** really happened.

It's not so much a "scam" - they just are not upfront about the job position because they acknowledge that calling it what it is will not allow them to acquire any prospective workers. I remember first applying for account manager or something, and then I saw another job name that seemed more appealing - maybe it was "executive manager". I called in asking about the difference between these two positions and I was not given an answer - my question was overlooked and i was simply asked if I'd like to set up an interview time. It later dawned on me that this was because their strategy is to list the same position under different appealing descriptions, without necessarily lieing that these jobs are not the same.

Again not a "scam" but very shady and a terrible job. The employee retention is so low that each week they have pre-management meetings to remind employees of the job benefits. When I quit, it came as no surprise to Rebby - the boss, because it's a revolving door business. my group leader was actually told in front of me to let it go and keep moving forward.

So disappointed that I found myself walking blocks with sore feet for hours in the heat. Good thing I didn't stay for too too long.

"they just are not upfront about the job position because they acknowledge that calling it what it is will not allow them to acquire any prospective workers."

That's like taking your wedding ring off at a bar because, "Hey, I might not bang half as many women behind my wife's back if these broads all knew I was hitched." It's filthy behavior. Don't defend these people at all.

I just accepted an appointment for an interview after confronting the caller and asking point-blank, "seriously, is this a bona-fide job, or is it gonna turn out to be something different when I get there?" I even told her that I had to find a babysitter and pay around $30 more from train and subway fare to get there." She STILL told me it was a "management training position."

Then I googled them and the complaints flooded the screen. After calling back, I found that she had signed her email to me with a different name than was on the email address itself.

Lies lies lies.

i totally agree,

and there is another company called OMG marketing which does exactly the same thing.

Do not fall for it, they make you work for free and does not even have the decency to pay your transportation for their own benefit of getting free labor for the day.

I was doubting about all these negative postings but it finally occur to me that this is how they get their free labor.

Guest

I was thinking about applying, but couldn't really find information on EXACTLY what this company does. Very lucrative.

Good thing I saw this site. Thanks
